The space elevator should be constructed on the moon first. No atmosphere to get in the way and less gravity to contend with. Baby steps. Also, the cure for global warming could very well be blocking the sun with material mined from the moon. One of my friends says there is titanium on the moon, but those moon rocks sure do look worthless to me ;-)
