Googling for a Space Elevator
Hours before Google launches its IPO comes this story from the San Jose Mercury News "The Google guys' attitude has been... Trust us... but has the brashness cost them?".
Of interest to the Space Elevator crowd, especially those seeking investors is this thought from co-founder Sergei Brin; "At a space camp in Alabama last year, Brin talked about creating a space elevator to transport cargo up a special tether attached to earth."
Soon to be billionaire Brin should be on your rolodex.

I wish there were a more lively debate about the space elevator concept going on, in the arena of "and then what?" For example, given the construction of the elevator within accepted parameters, what are the *immediate* programmes that could be applied to it? In other words, the elevator is not an end in itself, it is the means to any number of ends.
For example, assuming a 20T limitation, what <20T cargoes have even made it to the draft stage? Are there existing plans for a space station or craft made of <20T modules?
By now, I would accept hundreds of competing, potential lift cargoes waiting in queue for deployment, with priorities and other considerations already being discussed. Not just for "final destination" lifts, but things like xporting huge quantities of liquid oxygen to about the 5 mile lift for replenishing the ozone layer,
and deployment of other high altitude craft for any number of survey missions.
Getting the technology together for the elevator is just a short-term goal. I can envision dozens or hundreds of elevator lines creating a 3rd dimensional atmospheric and space access, with an elaborate ground facility for support functions. But they must first be put down on paper, for people to see a potential there, far beyond the thing-in-itself.

Skygazer,
Any chance you might have Sergei Brin's contact information?
