As you may have noticed if you've visited the Space Elevator Reference before we're undergoing some changes again. This is so we can better server the community. One major change is that the wiki has moved. It is now located at the following address: http://wiki.spaceelevator.com.

We're also in the process of organizing all our image and video assets. Shortly we'll launch our new Flickr and YouTube channels.

This coming weekend is the 2008 Space Elevator Conference being held at the Microsoft Conference Center in Redmond, WA. I'm hoping to attend at least part of the conference, Saturday afternoon through Sunday. However because of family commitments I am unsure If I will be able to make it.

If I am there, I would like to meet with anyone who is interested in taking the Space Elevator Reference to a whole new level. I've had some great volunteers contact me so far but I'm sure I'll need more. And because of family commitments I've been delayed in deploying the new site. The server is now ready and with some final touches the site will be ready to launch within a week.

Today the Space Elevator Reference is starting to use one of the hottest social networking services, Twitter. If you're not familiar with Twitter, it's a social networking microblogging service. We've created a Space Elevator Twitter channel where the community can share what they're doing, called tweets in Twitter speak.

For more information on this new community service please visit the Space Elevator Twitter Community page.

Besides myself, Ted Semon of the Space Elevator Blog fame has agreed to have his blog posts appear in the Space Elevator Twitter channel so you can keep up to date with all those golden nuggets he finds.

I received this yesterday from Bryan Laubscher. This is great news and I hope to attend however I may be in the high arctic at the Mars Institute HMP Research Station at that time.

I'll post more details as they arrive.

I wanted to give all of you an early announcement for the 2008 Space Elevator Conference. We have not had a Space Elevator “only” conference for 4 years.

This year the conference will be in Redmond, WA and will begin on Friday July 18th and will conclude on Sunday July 20th.

Please begin the process of spreading the word to your colleagues and Space Elevator contacts. The exact venue will be announced soon as will a suggested hotel in which to lodge.

Sincerely,
Bryan

Space Elevator Games

The SpaceWard Foundation has announced that the 2007 Space Elevator Games will be held at the Davis County Event Center just outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. The qualifying rounds will start on October 15, and the event will be open to the public between October 19 and October 21.

There will be more than 20 teams competing for this years $1,000,000 prize.

Ken Davidian, program manager for Centennial Challenges: “I am excited and impressed with the evolution and level of technical maturity demonstrated by the teams in both the Tether and Beam Power Challenges. Over the past 24 months, individual teams started from scratch, have grown continually, have coalesced into communities, and are on the verge of accomplishing substantial achievements worthy of a Centennial Challenges prize.”

New this year is the "Light Racers" -- that allows kids and young adults to take part in a realistic lunar exploration scenario and win cash prizes for their performance.

Black Line Ascension announces the opportunity to be an organizer of the 2008 Space Elevator Conference (PDF).

At this time we expect the conference to be held in Seattle, Washington. This conference will continue the tradition of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Space Elevator Conferences hosted by HighLift Systems, Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Institute for Scientific Research.

The purpose of the conference is to bring together scientists, engineers, businessmen, economists, educators, financiers, writers, students and others interested in the Space Elevator for wide-ranging papers and discussion sessions. The papers will report on the technical, political/social, economic and legal aspects of the Space Elevator. One discussion session will focus on the Space Elevator community’s roadmap and another will deal with raising the awareness of the Space Elevator in society. Additional sessions will be created as the need arises. The specific date of the conference has not been chosen yet.

The following is an announcement sent out by Detlef Mache on the 2008 German Space Elevator games.

After the great success of the first German Space-Elevator team ("Max-Born-Team") - where the team placed third among 16 international teams from different universities and institutes at the NASA-sponsored Space Elevator competition 2006 in New Mexico - the growing interest become extremely popular in Europe.
